Information
The mid-eighteenth century in Britain saw
an efflorescence of patriotic initiatives.
One of the most remarkable
but least known of these is
the Free British Fishery Society,
which was founded in 1749
and incorporated by royal charter
in the succeeding year.
Its immediate purpose was to challenge
Dutch supremacy in the deep-sea herring fishery
in order to recover for Britain
the natural bounty that lay off her coasts.
